ExLibris: Personalized Library Experience

Brief

Develop a forward-thinking concept for the future of public libraries, reimagining how they serve their communities and adapt to evolving needs.

As part of a four-person team, the PageTurners, we were tasked with reimagining the future of public libraries. Our solution, ExLibris, is a concept designed to enhance user experiences and foster a sense of ownership through personalization. Through thorough research, we identified pain points faced by current library users and translated these findings into actionable insights. These insights informed a meaningful solution that benefits both users and the wider community.

In this project, my primary contribution was 3D modeling the library space in SolidWorks and creating detailed renderings in KeyShot to visually communicate the concept successfully.

Research:

To design a solution for the future of public libraries, we began by exploring their past and present. Using a boundary-free approach, we gathered extensive information through various methods, including an era analysis, online research, digital surveys, in-person interviews, and observational studies.

We organized and analyzed our findings in Figma, uncovering key insights that became the foundation of our project.

Insight #1

Many library systems face security challenges that effect the patrons using the space

Insight #2

There were problems with patrons orienting and navigating themselves in large, urban libraries.

Insight #3

Libraries offer large amounts of resources for patrons to use, but having this selection means a lot of resources go under utilized.

Concept Ideation:

After analyzing our research, we centered our concept development on enhancing wayfinding, resource discovery, and community connection within the library. By improving these aspects of the user experience, we aimed to foster a sense of ownership and security for patrons.

During concept ideation, we chose to focus on the library entryway, as it serves as the starting point for users’ experiences within the space.

User Testing

With our final concept on paper, we built a life-size model to test our system with real users. We tested the UI with a Figma mockup, a personalized recommendation system, and an interactive map. Additionally, we evaluated the flow of people and direction with the layout of our desk. We documented all user tests, analyzed the feedback, and made adjustments to enhance the experience for our final deliverables and design.

Final Design

Our system features a curved desk that promotes natural flow and encourages interaction with library resources. Integrated into the desk is a navigation system with LED indicators that display occupancy and noise levels throughout the library, enabling users to choose an environment that suits their preferences.

The centerpiece of the entryway is the Resource Board, designed to align with the desk’s curved shape. This interactive display showcases the library’s extensive offerings with a dynamic idle screen. Equipped with proximity sensors, the board transitions to a focused interface as users approach, allowing them to filter and explore resources based on their interests.

The Resource Board includes touchpoints, which are central to the ExLibris system. Patrons can scan their library card or phone to access a personalized experience. This feature tailors resource recommendations to their preferences and saves their selections within the system’s algorithm for future use.

The Greater Impact

Our system strengthens the library’s role in the community by incentivizing library card sign-ups with personalized benefits. This fosters deeper engagement with library resources, provides valuable usage data, and helps secure funding to expand offerings.

Libraries collaborate with local businesses and cultural venues, offering resources like free tickets to museums and zoos or promoting community involvement opportunities. Increased engagement benefits both the library and these establishments through enhanced visibility and revenue. Small businesses can also advertise within the library, using our system’s recommendations to reach a broader audience effectively.
